Sunstream kicks off this year's softball league with a win

May 20, 2024

It’s a cool May evening at the Valley Street Park in Binghamton and the Sunstream softball team is warming up for its first game of the season against Ripic's Carousel. Co-coach Anne Tricarico rearranges the starting line-up before grabbing her glove.

In high school Tricarico played softball and ended up taking a 20-year break from athletics after graduation.

“I said I would play and then I didn’t, but then I came back,” Tricarico explained.

She found the YMCA's Women's 35+ softball league and the now 57-year-old has been playing the sport again for the last 14 years.

“It’s nice to be able to keep going,” Tricarico said referring to her age. “It’s great that we have this opportunity to.”

The YMCA of Broome County offers a variety of softball leagues for ages 16 and older. However, age is something the Sunstreams have proven to be nothing but a number.

“Do what you want to do, and do it the best you can,” Tricarico said with a chuckle. The Sunstream softball team ended its first game of the season with a win of 13 to 2.
