Honoring Strength and Community

Celebrating National Cancer Survivor Month at the Y

June 26, 2026

June is National Cancer Survivor Month, a time to honor the resilience, hope, and unwavering spirit of those who have faced cancer and continue to inspire us every day.

At the YMCA of Broome County, we believe survivorship is about more than facing a diagnosis. It’s about reclaiming health, building confidence, and connecting with a community that understands and uplifts you along the way.

More Than Recovery: A Community of Support

Today, there are nearly 17 million cancer survivors in the United States, each with a unique story and journey. Many survivors face lasting physical, emotional, and social challenges long after treatment ends. That’s where the Y comes in.

Through programs like Livestrong at the YMCA, we offer cancer survivors a safe, welcoming place to rebuild strength and confidence. This evidence-based program helps survivors improve physical fitness, reduce fatigue, and find emotional support alongside others who truly understand. What started out as a 4-year partnership experiment in only 10 YMCA's nearly 30 years ago has grown into the Lifestrong at the YMCA program that we know today in 505 YMCA branches in 42 states!

One Member’s Story

For Monica, joining LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA was about more than exercise—it was about rebuilding strength, restoring confidence, and finding connection after cancer treatment.

When she enrolled in the program, Monica's goals were simple: increase her strength, gain stamina, and feel a sense of belonging. Through the support of YMCA staff and fellow participants, she was able to make meaningful progress toward those goals while connecting with others who understood the challenges of the cancer journey.

"The LIVESTRONG program is supportive and dedicated to strengthening one's personal recovery, confidence, and emotional well-being," Monica shared. "Having taken advantage of the program, I would recommend it to cancer survivors. It really benefits those who participate."

Monica's experience is a reminder that healing doesn't happen alone. With the right support system, cancer survivors can continue building strength, confidence, and hope for the future.
