Couples That Workout Together, Stay Together

February 21, 2024

I adore you.

I’m crazy about you.

I’ve fallen over heels in love with you.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different ways to say ‘I love you.’ For Dave and Monica Gibson, it may be as simple as saying, “Let’s go to the Y for a workout!”

The Gibsons have been members of the Y for more than 20 years. After their daughter Emily was born, Monica’s father gifted his son-in-law a membership. Monica joined a few years later.

When they initially started their health journey at the Y, they exercised on their own, but about 5 years ago, they decided to start working out together. A 2021 study from the International Association for Relationship Research, indicates that people are more successful at exercising if they do so together with their romantic partner. Something the Gibsons seem to have proven.

“It’s nice that we can be here together because…we encourage each other when it comes time to roll out of bed in the morning,” Monica said with a chuckle. The couple usually gets their workout in at 6:00a.m.

“It helps to have someone encouraging you," Monica said.

They agreed it’s great staying active, and to have a place to get their joints in motion, but it’s the added friendships they’ve created which is a major factor in keeping them coming back.

“It’s a very social atmosphere, and that’s why we like coming here,” Dave said. “’We know that Phyllis and Becky are coming so we have to be there too!’ That motivates us as well.”

Motivating each other to keep reaching their goals.
