I’ve been a member of the Y for more than 20 years. I became a member shortly after my daughter was born to help shed a little of the post baby weight. I didn’t want to join a gym where I’d felt judged or intimidated. My husband was already a member and he told me to join the Y because the people were friendly, and nobody judged anyone for not being in shape.
In my years at the Y, I have developed many close friends who have become more than friends and more like family. My fellow gym rats have been there to support me during my battle with cancer, calling and checking on me daily to see if I or my family needed anything.
After I recovered from surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, I was encouraged to sign up for the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. It was an amazing experience that opened my eyes to others who struggled with cancer around me and who we supported each other. Our group came to depend on each other to push us along when we really struggled for that extra ‘oomph’ to get through a day.
After battling cancer, and completing LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, I wanted to give back and use my experience to help others on their journey. I really feel fulfilled by helping people and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA compelled me to help other cancer survivors.
I have gained a great support systems, new friends, and motivation to keep working hard to get back in shape.
In addition to being a member, I have been motivated to become a YMCA Team Member and work in the Wellness Center. I love being a part of the team and using my experiences to motivate and influence others on their journey to better health and wellbeing.
