When Cassie’s 2019 spring semester ended at her Pennsylvania campus, she didn’t worry about finding a summer job when she returned home. The 20-year old Athletic Training major immediately picked up YMCA of Broome County lifeguard shifts vacated by university students returning to their hometowns. Cassie, who started guarding at age 16, said one advantage of the job is the flexible hours that fit her availability.
Cassie also acquired critical life skills in her early years as an outdoor guard at Binghamton’s Rec Park and now through her 2 ½ years at the YMCA. She said the position, “taught me how attentive we need to be to those around us because anything can happen in a split second.” She said YMCA CPR/AED/First Aid certifications, also required for her major, can be “used forever.”
Cassie values her YMCA friendships. She said, “you become close with the other guards and instructors. The YMCA members appreciate that we make sure they are safe in the water, while also having fun.”
At a time when pools and outdoor parks face critical shortages, Patty Scotto, YMCA of Broome County Aquatics Director, appreciates Cassie and her other dedicated guard staff. She listed these benefits:
- Professional Rescuer Certifications
- Save someone’s life
- Change someone’s life
- Decision making skills
- Leadership skills
- Responsibility
Patty says, “We are now hiring lifeguards and swim instructors at the Y! The staff is not limited to high school and college students. Retirees or others ready to start the next chapter of life can find a rewarding way to invest their time and make a lasting difference in our community.”
The YMCA lifeguard course includes training in aquatic rescues, First Aid, CPR, AED and accident prevention.
- Training and certification provided (ask about our pay back program)
- Morning and daytime hours available
- Free YMCA membership
The next lifeguard training is scheduled for July 8-13. Register today!
