Celebrating 182 Years of Community

Happy Founder's Day from the YMCA of Broome County

June 6, 2026

On June 6, 1844, a small group of young men gathered in London with one goal in mind: to create a safe, supportive place for people to grow in spirit, mind and body. That vision became the YMCA and 182 years later, it’s still going strong right here in Broome County.

Our Local Legacy

Did you know? The YMCA of Broome County first opened its doors in 1865, organized in a building on the north side of Court Street, near the river, offering musical and literary entertainment, lectures, social receptions, evening classes, Bible study, and prayer. Since then, generations of families have found support, friendship, and opportunities to thrive within our walls.

Over the years, we have become one of the leading facilities in Broome County for unhoused men after opening the Susquehanna Street building in downtown Binghamton in 1967 as part of an urban renewal project.

Our story is really your story, shaped by every member, volunteer, donor, and staff member who’s made the YMCA of Broome County a true community cornerstone.

Honoring the Past Through Our Future

At the YMCA of Broome County, we’re proud to carry on the legacy that started in London in 1844. From swim lessons and summer camps to wellness programs, men's housing, and spaces to gather and connect - the Y is more than just a gym. We’re a hub for belonging, personal growth, and community impact.

As we celebrate YMCA Founder’s Day, we honor the generations of staff, volunteers, members, and supporters who have made our work possible. Your commitment keeps the Y’s mission alive, creating opportunities for everyone, no matter their background or income.
