Celebrating Older Americans Month
Staying Connected and Healthy at the YMCA of Broome County
May is Older Americans Month, and here at the YMCA of Broome County, we’re celebrating the incredible older adults who inspire us every single day.
Staying active, connected and engaged is key to healthy aging, and at the Y, we believe age should never be a barrier to living life to the fullest. Every day, older adults in our community are proving that it’s never too late to try something new, make a new friend, or reach a new goal.
From coffee groups to cardio classes or nutrition programs, pickleball courts to pool workouts, our Y is a place where older adults can:
- Stay active and build strength, balance and flexibility.
- Connect with friends, old and new, who cheer them on.
- Try new activities like yoga, dance, or swim lessons.
- Volunteer and give back to the community.
- Simply enjoy a warm, welcoming place where everyone belongs.
Why staying connected matters:
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, social connection is a vital part of staying healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally. At the Y, we see the power of connection every day when members share a laugh in class, check in on each other over coffee, or meet up for a game of pickleball.
Meet our members:
Just ask Dick, who says his time at the Y has significantly improved his physical and mental well-being, fostering friendships and receiving encouragement from the Wellness Center staff. “My connection to the Y, along with my Senior Center and Church connections, has made a tremendous difference in my life!” he shares. Initially unfamiliar with anyone at the fitness center, he now feels at ease among his peers. He eagerly anticipates his morning routine at the West Family Y every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, enjoying the workouts and noting his improved physical condition.
