Ed Dunscombe, YMCA of Broome County Member, Honored by County Executive

June 25th, 2018, Declared Ed Dunscombe Day by Proclamation of Jason Garner

Broome County Executive, Jason Garner, declared Wednesday, June 27th, 2018, Ed Dunscombe Day. The official proclamation honored Ed (YMCA of Broome County member since 1998) for his 38 years of excellent service to the community as Director of the George F Johnson Library in Endicott, NY. On June 29th, Ed’s final day before retirement, he mused about what comes next. Ed always made his YMCA Wellness Center work-outs a priority, in spite of his busy schedule; now he says, “I will be there so often, ‘they will be sick of seeing me’!” In addition, he plans to spend time with his wife, Sharon, also a YMCA member and a retired librarian (Your Home Public Library of Johnson City, NY), traveling and visiting with family, especially their first grandchild, Juliette Summer, born on June 21st, 2018, the first day of summer.

Ed is living proof of the benefits to wellness. He suffered a heart attack in 1997 at age 43. He started working out at West Family YMCA the next year. He said he liked the ambience. Plus, with all the facility offered, he had no excuse not to “do it”. He started listening to the Mango language app (available for free with a George F. Johnson library card) to maximize the time he spent on the machines. His dedication to a healthy lifestyle, that included YMCA heart-healthy workouts, made it possible for him to celebrate life for the last 21 years and reach his most recent milestones, retirement and the birth of his precious granddaughter.

Congratulations, Ed, from the YMCA of Broome County! We thank you for your service to our community and wish you the best in your retirement years. We will never tire of seeing you or Sharon at the YMCA; you are both inspiring example of wellness.
