Sisters Find Wellness at the YMCA in Their Retirement

“I smile during my classes because I am so happy to be in the pool and healthy in my retirement!” Kathy

Sisters, Nancy and Kathy, began their wellness journey at the YMCA of Broome in February 2019. Both ladies wanted to make their health a priority after retiring; that included losing weight. Nancy’s grandchildren and chairing her upcoming 50th class reunion also motivated her. Nancy’s fear of water would have kept in the shallow end of the pool had Kathy not convinced her to try deep water exercise. Nancy said, “After a few classes I was hooked. It is very relaxing and you feel less stressed. I go at least 4 days a week now.” She and a friend also joined Joints in Motion classes.

In the 7 months since becoming Y members, Nancy and Kathy are pleased with the results. Nancy says, “Diet and going to the Y helped me lose 30 pounds since February. Dealing with obstacles in life is easier and I have more energy. And I am keeping my muscles strong.” She added, “I tell everyone about the Y, how much I love going and how much better I feel. I received many compliments this summer at my class reunion of how youthful I looked.”

Kathy also recounted her progress: “I have so much more strength and the core work has helped decrease my lower back pain! I have lost 22 pounds and feel better both physically and mentally. Deep Water exercise is great way to stay flexible with little or no harm to your back and legs. I have made many wonderful friends and feel 20 years younger.
