Private Lessons Turn Four-Year Old Into a Confident Swimmer

Four-year old Morly took her first YMCA swim lessons with Shaylee in May. Her mom, Laura, said, “It was important that Morly be confident in water so I could feel safe taking her and her younger brother in the pool together this summer. When I met Shaylee, I told her I didn’t want Morly to use the float belt anymore.”

Laura marveled. In ten private lessons, Morly very quickly reached this goal. She also mastered retrieving rings off the pool floor and improved multiple strokes. Plus, the determined preschooler conquered jumping off the diving board with no float.

She continued, “I try to give them space when they are working. So, I can’t speak much about what Shaylee is saying to help Morly be so successful. She is clearly a caring and supportive instructor who knows how to get the best out of Morly. And Morly is very hard working. The two make a great team.”

Shaylee shared her perspective: “When we began in May, Morly used a float belt and would only doggy paddle. She now swims without the belt and has built strong endurance for a four-year old. By the end of July, she swam 100 yards. She also learned the backstroke and breaststroke. Her favorite activity is grabbing for sinking rings. She has become so confident in her abilities and has learned a lot about water safety. She loves to tell me about swimming with her friends or her preschool class, and is even planning to have her birthday party at our pool!”

Laura says, “We have purchased another ten lessons. We are very thankful for the Y and for Shaylee.”
