The YMCA of Broome County is joining the Cornhole craze sweeping the nation. Four Cornhole Leagues start on January 22nd and run through March 28th at the West Family Y gym. The Cornhole revival began about 15 years ago in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Backyard game enthusiasts tossed cloth bags filled with dried corn at a wooden target. According to the website, cornholeworldwide.com, legend has it the game of Cornhole actually began in the fourteen-century. A cabinet maker, Mr. Matthias, observed children throwing rocks into a ground hog hole as a sport. He employed his carpentry skills to create a less dangerous version of the game. Corn kernels, abundantly available and sewn into cloth bags, served as a safer substitute for rock chucking. The availability of corn in the Mid-West may have also played a part in the recent revival of the sport. It has quickly spread from backyards and tail-gate parties to professional league status.
Dan Smith, Fund Development and Volunteer Officer of the YMCA of Broome County, enthusiastically promotes the new Cornhole Leagues. He said Cornhole fits the mission to create programs that reach a wider age span. Other benefits include: keeping participants active and moving, socialization and multi-generational opportunities. The activity also adds a low impact option to our senior programming and for those whose abilities limit participation in other sports.
