Homelessness is a condition that exists at the intersection of circumstance and psyche, a state of being far deeper than the absence of a home. For many, it is a slow unraveling—a series of events that erode the basic scaffolding of life until, one day, all that remains is a body moving through the world without shelter. What happens to the human mind when the concept of "home" disappears? How does one navigate a world that suddenly feels both too big and too small, with nowhere to belong?

The CDC says every day 10 people die from unintentional drowning. Of this number, 2 are 14 years or younger. It is the 5th leading cause of unintentional injury death. For every child who dies, another 5 are treated at the ER. More than 50% of that number require hospitalization; some suffer irrevocable brain damage.

When Cassie’s 2019 spring semester ended at her Pennsylvania campus, she didn’t worry about finding a summer job when she returned home. The 20-year old Athletic Training major immediately picked up YMCA of Broome County lifeguard shifts vacated by university students returning to their hometowns. Cassie, who started guarding at age 16, said one advantage of the job is the flexible hours that fit her availability.
