Lifeguard Training

The YMCA 6th Edition Lifeguard Course is designed to provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills to be a successful lifeguard. You will learn pool and waterfront lifeguard skills, as well as safety and survival skills. Participants will learn guarding techniques, along with proper water entries and rescues.

The course includes: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications.

Participants must be able to:

  • Tread water for at least 2 minutes
  • Swim 100 yards of front crawl
  • Swim 50 yards each of: front crawl with head up, sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke with head up, inverted breaststroke kick with hands on stomach
  • Perform a feet first surface dive in 8 to 10 feet of water and then swim underwater for 15 feet
  • Perform a series of tasks given by the instructor to demonstrate listening and scanning ability as well as stamina and endurance

Recertification

Must have been certified in the “On Guard 5th Edition” to enroll in this course.
Bring proof of certification to class.

All sessions are held at the Binghamton Y. Registration deadlines are 2 weeks prior to the start of the class. You must attend all days of your session to be considered for certification.
